Interview with Dronestagram’s talented top pilot Enrico Pesc…

Enrico Pescantini, Italian aerial photographer, is one of our very talented dronists. He’s known on Dronestagram as pescart. His aerial captures are beautiful, the prove is that some of them appeared in Dronestagram’s new book, Dronescapes: The New Aerial Photography from Dronestagram. We wanted to know more about his passion for aerial photography.

My life goal is visiting all the countries in the world, and photography is my companion to all my travels.

My photography is focused on travel and POP culture, and I love to try all type of photography: I started with digital, then I had my Polaroid period and in the past 2 years drone photography took over!

When did your passion for the drones begin?
I started to look at drone photography in 2015, and my first drone, a gift from my girlfriend, has been a Parrot AR Drone 2, a starting point for understanding how to take photos from the sky. After few months of practice, I moved to a DJI Phantom 3, and it has been true love.

What kind of drone do you have for the moment?
As a photographer, DJI drones are the best for me, so I try to keep up with the latest ones. Currently I have the DJI Phantom 4 Pro, which has been truly an upgrade in terms of photo quality.

What are your favorite flight areas?
I mostly fly during my travels around the world, and I don’t have a favorite location, it depends on what is around me and how I believe it will look like from the sky.

Nature areas give more freedom on the flights, and let you focus on exploring the surroundings and finding the best frame for the perfect shot.

What are the rules to follow in your country and what do you think?

Unfortunately Italy has quite strict rules on drones: 70 meters of altitude, no cities and no night flights, and it is truly a shame since we have the best sights in the world.

They should simplify the rules and let the professionals fly under a license, easy to obtain, not like the one we have not. Luckily, soon a European regulation will come in place.

Enrico Pescantini’s top three skills you need to be a good pilot

A good pilot needs to be responsible, calm and reactive, this means know when and where to fly, and also when to leave the drone on the ground. And be ready to face any difficulties during the flight.

To be a drone photographer is something else, you need a good eye and an understanding (and respect) of photography.

What movie or photo are you the most proud of and why?
“Jungle Beach”, taken in Thailand, is a perfect balance of colors of the nature, of jungle, water and rocks, and I truly love it. Also “Ice Climbing” gives you an idea on the challenges faced by the climber while ascending an iced waterfall. And the challenge was also for me, piloting the drone at -15 degrees has been very very hard, at a certain point my fingers were not moving anymore!

What areas of the world would you like to explore with your drone in the future?
My dream is to visit Antarctica, and I believe that explore it with a drone would be a once in a lifetime experience!

Any particular anecdote you may wish to share with us?
Yes, to all the drone photographers out there, be safe and be passionate! I lost my first Phantom in the Mediterranean sea for attempting to take a shot close to the water: after the right despair, I bought a new one, because it is a passion, like photography itself, that can’t be stopped!

Watch some of his cool aerial videos!

Thanks for your time Enrico
Keep on flying and posting amazing aerial captures & videos 🙂
