“Made Fresh – Arrives Fresh” is the Dominoes motto, and it looks like they may have found a new way to delivery.

The first Dominoes pizza has been delivered by drone in Auckland, New Zealand with, it seems, only very minor damage to the cheese.

Dominoes has been an innovator in delivery from their inception; creating a system and a vehicle that would streamline the delivery process to be the fastest in the business.  It’s a system that doesn’t only provide consumers with a hot pizza, but has made the company into a household name across the globe.  Dominoes is now ready for the next step  – drone delivery.

In a joint statement with the drone delivery company Flirtey, Dominoes  CEO Don Meij said that drone delivery was more than just a “pie in the sky” idea.  “We’ve always said that it doesn’t make sense to have a 2-tonne machine delivering a 2-kilogram order,” said Meij.  The company says that it hopes to implement regular drone delivery in New Zealand by next year.

Flirtey has been a pioneer in drone delivery.  Last month, they conducted the first  commercial drone delivery – Slurpee, coffee, donuts and a chicken sandwich – as part of a trial with 7-Eleven here in the US.  They have also demonstrated drone delivery in rural, urban, and ship-to-shore scenarios.

Last year, New Zealand became one of the world’s first countries to clear commercial drone deliveries; but the country still has restrictions on BVLOS (beyond visual line of sight) flight, which could limit the application.  Drone delivery will be legal here in the US as of Monday when the Small UAS Rule will be implemented, but restrictions on BVLOS flight and flight over people will limit the application.

Domino’s says it hopes to complete more drone delivery trials in Australia, Belgium, France, The Netherlands, Japan and Germany.
