Drone Forward Works with Wounded Warrior Project

Drone Forward, Inc worked with Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) to hold Drone Games for military veterans recently. Drone Forward, Inc is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, founded by a passionate group of educators and entrepreneurs, offering unique learning opportunities based around aerial drone education.

“There were different stations in the training — instantly the veterans were bonded because of who they were,” says Dave Wainwright, a Drone Forward, Inc event assistant. “It was fun — it was aweinspiring being around these guys, to watch their teamwork.”

The drone building exercises, held in late January in Tyrone, GA, were designed for military veterans and demonstrated basic drone skills. Drone Forward, Inc is passionate about solidifying the link between education and future uncrewed systems careers.

“Now is the time to teach about the huge potential in drone technology,” said Drone Forward, Incfounder Jesse Pacheco. “I could sit in a classroom for hours and not get through to a student, but hand them a drone, set up a scavenger hunt, and their eyes light up.”

The nonprofit’s mission is to strengthen the contributions of robotics and uncrewed vehicle technologies by providing educational opportunities and experiential gateways that lead to drone related careers of the future.

“Wounded Warrior Project works to get veterans connected in their community,” said Jason Bush, Wounded Warrior Project outreach specialist. “Drones are a fun way to get warriors out of their house, our of isolation, and healing with other veterans.”

The Atlanta-based organization custom designs in-person and virtual events for groups of all ages. Each different Drone Forward program has variations with modifications made to accommodatevirtual, in-person, and hybrid modalities. Whether it’s a one-hour FPV (first-person view) racingdrone build classes, day-long events with drone flying lessons or talks from drone entrepreneurs,Drone Forward uses drone-centric education to be the vehicle to accomplish the greatest results.

“The workshop was a wonderful experience — it provided an opportunity for us to learn and assemble a drone as a team,” said participant Valerie Eichelberger. “Once assembled, we tested it out and, sure enough, up it went! The instructors were very helpful, understanding and patient, not only on each obstacle course but all day long.”

“When they’re leaving the military, or if they’re leaving the military because of an injury, they may not have a civilian career path in mind,” Louis said. “Drones might be one of those options, so as they do that (participate in Drone Forward, Inc events), they get a chance to learn something that could be a trade, or could be just a hobby.”
