Students try variety of STEAM activities

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A West Humboldt Park high school hosted its first annual STEAMfest Saturday.

STEAM stands for Science Technology Engineering Math and the Arts. At North-Grand High School, dozens of students line the halls, some showing off drone piloting skills.

There is also a laser- cutting station, virtual reality stations, and 3-D printing demonstrations. At the end of the hall, a door leads into the schools pool area, where the underwater robotics team was at play.

Principal Emily Feltes said the maker space contains a recording studio and a Mac lab.

“Our maker space is a big space where students can go to create whatever they want,” she added.

Sophomore Alejandro Ortiz said he’s learned that there is a lot of personal responsibility in working as a team in the underwater robotics program.

“My future career or what I hope it to be is robotics and this has helped me out a lot with understanding of electricity and the flow of currents to progress in my future.”
