NEW TOWN – Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College in New Town has been awarded a grant of $1.9 million to fund an innovative drone project. The venture will enhance the college’s technological expertise and improve transportation and healthcare for the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation and the wider region.
The drone project uses cutting-edge technology to enhance traditional delivery systems in a cost-effective manner. The technology aims to serve communities historically underserved or disadvantaged, with a special focus on remote areas like the Fort Berthold Reservation. The aim is to create an extensive transportation network that spans across the state or region, leveraging drone technology.
The plan it will revolutionize healthcare delivery, especially for critical medications such as insulin. It will be particularly beneficial in regions where travel is often hindered by severe weather conditions.
In addition, the team will develop a plan to expand workforce capacity in aeronautics among MHA tribal members through partnerships with the University of North Dakota, the Northern Plains Unmanned Arial System Test-Site and their partners including Thales and Airspace Link. This will involve both education and training as well as funding to facilitate the participation of the current and future student population.
