Ireland’s first drone deliveries coming to homes at 35 MPH

SEOUL, South Korea: A new drone delivery service in Ireland, run by Samsung Electronics, promises to deliver digital devices within minutes of their being ordered.

Samsung officials said that it began operating drones last week in Oranmore, west of Dublin, in partnership with Manna Drone Delivery.

Initially, drones will fly at 35 MPH to homes in Oranmore, arriving within minutes for customers ordering product on Samsung’s Irish website, the company said in a statement.

Available by drone delivery are Galaxy S21 Ultra, the Galaxy Buds Pro, the Galaxy Tab S7, the Galaxy Watch 3 and Galaxy A series phones.

Officials said Samsung will later provide drone deliveries throughout Ireland.

Alan Hicks, Chief Technology Officer for Manna, noted that the partnership with Samsung is the first of its kind in the world, as reported by UPI.

Drone deliveries are slowly becoming a reality, as United Parcel Service received approval in 2019 to deliver medical supplies within hospital campuses using drones.

Also, in 2016 Amazon received approval to provide drone delivery in the UK, and was granted similar approval in the United States in 2020.

Additionally, industry officials said Walmart is testing drone deliveries.

“Given technical limitations and institutional and social constraints, a complete shift to drone logistics delivery is not yet possible. For example, we have to worry about hacking, privacy issues and possible terrorist threats,” Jung Hoon of the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute told UPI Korea.

“But the drone delivery service will be expanded in the future. In particular, the COVID-19 pandemic accelerates the trend because virus-wary customers prefer having items delivered at their doorsteps,” he said.
