NEW DELHI: In a first, Delhi Police used a drone in a murder investigation while looking for a body in a forested area in Mehrauli.
Two former members of a gang were murdered and their bodies dumped in south Delhi for appearing as witnesses against the kingpin. Two of the killers have been identified and arrested.

It is good that Delhi Police is moving with the times and using state-of-the-art technology to crack a case. Technology can indeed be a big enabler in crime investigation. But, as the Supreme Court and several police reform commissions have stressed, it is equally important that the investigative and law and order functions of the police be separated. Having the same personnel doing both compromises the quality of investigation, which leads to low conviction rates because the prosecution often does not have a strong enough case.

The prime accused is a history-sheeter from east Delhi. He was recently released on parole from Tihar Jail due to the novel coronavirus outbreak. Raids are being conducted to arrest him and his other associates.
“Around 9pm on July 15, cops received a PCR call about an injured man with possible gunshot injury lying beside a nullah near Freedom Fighter Colony,” said DCP (South) Atul Kumar Thakur.
When a police team reached the spot, they found that the victim had already been taken to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in an ambulance and declared brought dead.
“While inspecting the spot, a lot of blood was found on a slab of the nullah where the injured man was found. A bloodsoaked mobile phone was also recovered,” said a police officer.
A blood trail was also seen going inside the jungle. Police scanned CCTV footage of the area and found that six people, including the victim, had come there in a white Santro. They went inside the jungle on foot after parking the car in a vacant plot. They had a party during which the murder was committed. Empty bottles of liquor, water and cigarettes, were found there.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Ali, a resident of Geeta Colony. The car was identified from the CCTV footage, which led police to one of the suspects, Vipin Balyan from Bhajanpura.
During questioning, Balyan told police about his associate Satender from Khajuri Khas. He added that they had killed another person the same night. “Based on this revelation, we combed the jungle with the help of an unmanned aerial vehicle. This led to the discovery of the second body, which also had gunshot injuries,” the DCP added.
The second victim was identified as Sanjay. He and Ali had criminal antecedents. Both the deceased and the arrested were part of a gang of six men, who were identified from the CCTV footage.
