General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI) and AeroVironment completed the first-ever air launch of a Switchblade 600 loitering munition. It launched from an MQ-9A Reaper drone. Testing happened July 22-24, 2025, at the US Army’s Yuma Proving Ground. Results were announced publicly in September 2025. Two munitions were released: one inert, one with a live high-explosive warhead.
What did the test actually demonstrate?
Each Switchblade 600 was released from the MQ-9A. Control then handed off to a separate ground operator stationed closer to the target area. That’s the key concept: the MQ-9A launches the munition from a safe standoff distance. It then hands control to whoever is best positioned to guide it to the target.
Why launch it from a drone instead of the ground?
GA-ASI president David R. Alexander said the MQ-9A can stand off farther from enemy weapons systems. That extends the effective range of the Switchblade 600 well beyond a ground launch. The test also showcased enhanced satellite communications for launch, control, and engagement. That positions the MQ-9A as a “mothership” for other companies’ air-launched munitions.
Is this an operational capability now?
Not yet. This was a test milestone, not a fielded system. No production or acquisition contract was announced alongside the demonstration. It shows the concept works. But turning it into a deployed capability would require further testing and a formal Army program.
