What actually defines an FPV drone?
FPV stands for first-person view. The pilot flies wearing video goggles that show a live feed from a camera on the aircraft. That’s different from watching the drone from the ground. Piloting is manual and requires real skill, unlike autonomous flight. The category started as hobby and racing equipment: small, fast, agile multirotors built from mass-produced or hobbyist-assembled components.
What actually defines a loitering munition?
A loitering munition is a purpose-built weapon that combines a warhead with the ability to loiter. It can circle an area searching for or waiting on a target. A conventional missile just flies to fixed pre-set coordinates instead. Terminal guidance is typically autonomous or semi-autonomous, using an onboard seeker or man-in-the-loop confirmation. That replaces continuous manual piloting all the way to impact.
Can you reuse either of these?
Racing and hobby FPV drones are inherently reusable. Most true loitering munitions are one-way by design. The airframe is consumed in the strike. Some systems are marketed with an abort-and-return capability if no target is identified. A few newer designs aim for partial recoverability. But expendability remains the default assumption for a purpose-built loitering munition.
Why do people confuse the two now?
Because the line has genuinely blurred in combat. Ukrainian forces have converted commercial and hobby FPV racing frames into improvised precision-strike weapons. They’ve attached munitions like RPG warheads, mortar rounds, or grenades. Some carry drop-release mechanisms that let the airframe return and fly again. Analysts increasingly describe these modified FPVs as functioning like improvised loitering munitions. They still lack the autonomous guidance and purpose-built engineering of a dedicated system, though. Cost is one of the clearest remaining differences. A modified FPV can run under $500 in components. A purpose-built loitering munition costs considerably more.
So what’s the simplest way to tell them apart?
Ask two questions. Is a human actively flying it all the way to the target, or is guidance autonomous in the final stage? And is the airframe meant to come home, or is it built to be consumed? A manually-flown, reusable frame is an FPV drone. An autonomous, expendable weapon with an integrated warhead is a loitering munition. Everything in between sits closer to the improvised end of that spectrum. A modified commercial FPV carrying a drop munition is a good example — it doesn’t fit cleanly into either category.
