EDGE GY-300: A 300kg-Class Cargo Drone Helicopter

The EDGE GY-300 is a UAE-built, uncrewed cargo helicopter that carries up to 300kg over distances up to 400km. It cruises at about 120 kph with a 280hp turbo engine. That gives it four hours of loaded endurance and up to 3.6km operating altitude. EDGE Group introduced it at Abu Dhabi’s UMEX exhibition in January 2024.

What kind of aircraft is the GY-300?

It’s a helicopter-style uncrewed cargo aircraft, not a fixed-wing or multirotor drone. It measures 2.8m by 5.1m by 1.2m with an 11m rotor diameter, powered by a 280hp turbo fuel engine rather than electric motors.

What can it actually carry, and how far?

Up to 300kg of cargo over distances up to 400km. Cruise speed runs about 120 kph, with a top speed of 160 kph. It can operate at altitudes up to 3.6km, or roughly 12,000 feet. Loaded endurance is about four hours; unloaded, that stretches to six.

What makes it suited for rough terrain?

It’s built for short-takeoff-and-landing operation on unpaved surfaces, with long-travel suspension and six-ply tires designed for rough ground. It’s remotely piloted but also has autonomous capability, including a flight path that can be programmed in advance. Redundant autopilot, actuation, and engine-control systems back that up.

What is it actually for?

EDGE Group has positioned it for both cargo transport and humanitarian aid delivery, particularly to locations that are hard to reach by road. The UAE has since ordered 200 EDGE uncrewed cargo and ISR helicopters. That extends the platform beyond a single demonstration unit into a real procurement program.
