DJI Aeroscope was a drone detection system used at airports, prisons, and major events. It identified and tracked DJI drones by intercepting the signal between the aircraft and its remote controller. DJI discontinued Aeroscope in March 2023. Organizations that relied on it have shifted to Remote ID-based detection systems and multi-vendor platforms like AeroDefense AirWarden, Dedrone, and Skyshyld.
What was DJI Aeroscope?
Aeroscope worked by intercepting the telemetry link between a DJI drone and its controller, rather than using radar. It decoded that signal to show a drone’s location, speed, altitude, serial number, and the pilot’s takeoff location. Under ideal conditions, DJI said the system could pull that information in as little as two seconds. Detection range ran up to 50 km depending on the configuration. That was 7-50 km for the stationary version, and roughly 5 km for the portable, off-network mobile unit.
Airports, prisons, nuclear power plants, and major sporting and government events used Aeroscope to spot unauthorized drone activity. Its biggest limitation was built into how it worked. Aeroscope could only detect DJI drones, and not every DJI model, because it depended on decoding DJI’s own proprietary telemetry signal. A non-DJI drone was invisible to it.
Why did DJI discontinue Aeroscope?
DJI discontinued Aeroscope in March 2023, first pulling the portable version before ending the product line. DJI hasn’t published a detailed public breakdown of the decision. That predates DJI’s broader US restrictions, including the FCC’s addition of DJI hardware to its Covered List in December 2025. The practical effect was immediate. Organizations that had built security procedures around Aeroscope were left needing a replacement. DJI offered no direct like-for-like product to move to.
What replaced Aeroscope?
Two shifts happened at once. First, the FAA’s Remote ID rule took effect, requiring most drones to broadcast identification and location information. That meant detection systems no longer needed to rely on decoding DJI’s proprietary link specifically. Second, a wider field of counter-UAS vendors moved to fill the gap Aeroscope left:
- AeroDefense AirWarden — a Remote ID receiver that also picks up WiFi-based drone broadcasts, built specifically to serve former Aeroscope customers looking for a direct replacement.
- Dedrone — a broader detection platform that can run alongside an existing Aeroscope unit or replace it, covering a wider range of drone manufacturers rather than DJI alone.
- Skyshyld — a modular counter-UAS system built around real-time drone activity detection rather than one manufacturer’s telemetry protocol.
The common thread across all three: none of them are limited to DJI drones the way Aeroscope was. That’s a meaningful upgrade for any facility that needs to detect the full range of drones now in the air, not just one manufacturer’s.
Should you still look for a used or existing Aeroscope unit?
For facilities that already have Aeroscope deployed, it still functions for the DJI drones it was built to detect. DJI’s discontinuation stopped new sales, not the operation of existing hardware. But for anyone building a new detection setup, a Remote ID-based or multi-vendor system covers far more of the drones actually in the airspace today. That’s the gap that ended Aeroscope’s usefulness as a standalone solution in the first place.
