The DJI Matrice 4T is the newer generation of DJI’s enterprise thermal drone, succeeding the Matrice 30T (launched 2022). The M4T adds a longer-range 1,800m laser rangefinder (versus 1,200m), O4 transmission, and built-in AI detection for vehicles and vessels. It typically costs less than the M30T. But it drops the M30T’s IP55 waterproof rating, which still matters for teams flying in rain or heavy dust.
What’s actually different between the Matrice 4T and Matrice 30T?
The Matrice 4T is DJI’s next-generation replacement for the Matrice 30T. The changes concentrate in range, connectivity, and onboard intelligence, rather than a full redesign:
- Rangefinder: the M4T’s laser rangefinder reaches 1,800m, versus 1,200m on the M30T.
- Transmission: the M4T uses DJI’s newer O4 transmission system, replacing the M30T’s O3.
- Night vision: the M4T adds an NIR (near-infrared) auxiliary light specifically for low-light and night operations.
- AI detection: the M4 series has a built-in AI model that can detect vehicles and vessels automatically, useful for search-and-rescue and routine patrol work without an operator manually scanning every frame.
- Weatherproofing: this is the tradeoff. The M30T carries an IP55 waterproof rating that the M4T does not match, making the M30T the better choice for operators who regularly fly in rain or heavy dust.
Which one costs more?
Pricing varies meaningfully by bundle and retailer. But the M4T is consistently reported as the cheaper of the two, undercutting the M30T by a significant margin. The M4T is also the newer platform, with better range and transmission specs. That leaves the M30T’s remaining case resting almost entirely on its IP55 rating and its longer-established third-party accessory ecosystem, not on price.
Which one should you actually buy?
If your operations involve regular flying in rain, dust storms, or other harsh weather, the M30T’s IP55 rating is a real, functional reason to pay more for the older platform. There’s no substitute for actual waterproofing once conditions turn bad mid-flight. For everything else, the M4T is the stronger buy at a lower price. That covers inspection, search-and-rescue, night operations, and general enterprise thermal work in normal conditions, where its longer rangefinder, newer transmission system, and built-in AI detection all matter.
