DJI Masters Series Kicks Off With Yann Arthus-Bertrand

Drone manufacturer DJI has appointed French aerial photographer and film director Yann Arthus-Bertrand one of three DJI ‘Masters’.

The French artist, whose work includes ‘The Earth From Above’ – a United Nations-supported collection of photo essays that has sold more than 4 million copies – has been using DJI equipment while shooting his latest film, “Woman.”

With assistance from a support team from DJI, Arthus-Bertrand worked with the Inspire 2 drone and Zenmuse X7 camera on location around the world.

Old School Meets New Tech in Aerial Photography

Yann Arthus-Bertrand made his name in the world of aerial photography long before drones were on the scene. He founded the Altitude Agency in 1991, the world’s first press agency and image bank specializing in aerial photography. In 1994, Arthus-Bertrand began a UNESCO.-sponsored journey to document the world’s most beautiful landscapes from helicopters and hot-air balloons.

“When the pioneer of aerial photography, Yann Arthus-Bertrand, adopts DJI technology, magic happens,” said Ferdinand Wolf, Creative Director at DJI.

“Our team helped Yann to capture beautiful shots that would not be possible with a helicopter. DJI is proud to assist this great artist in his long-term commitment to highlight the achievements and challenges of humankind and to draw attention to the need to preserve our planet and natural environment.”

DJI Masters to Highlight the Power of Visual Storytelling

DJI have revealed their staff have been working closely with Yann Arthus-Bertrand and co-director Anastasia Mikova since 2017, offering support on set at several locations from Portugal to the Republic of the Congo and China.

In part that was introduce the Zenmuse X7 camera and its 35mm sensor to Arthus-Bertrand’s large-scale film project.

“The sensation of flying a camera while staying on the the ground is a totally new and amazing experience for me,” said Yann Arthus-Bertrand.

“We are able to shoot aerial images from a completely new perspective, and I am convinced that I will continue using drone technology for my work in the future. I wanted to be as flexible as possible when filming the environment and the women who will be the true heroes of the movie. A drone is incredibly easy to use, which facilitated our work in this complex set-up significantly.”

This isn’t the last you’ll hear about DJI’s new Masters series. In line with the launch of the company’s Pro brand, DJI “Masters – The Power of Visual Storytelling,” will show off short films featuring three of the world’s most celebrated filmmakers.

Yann Arthus-Bertrand was up first. Next are Claudio Miranda and Rodney Charters.
