The FAA’s Drone Advisory Committee Meeting is this Friday: Y…

Like many events these days, the FAA’s Drone Advisory Committee has gone remote.  The meeting will be held this Friday, June 19: from 12 -3 pm EST – and drone stakeholders have the opportunity to watch, as the meetings will be livestreamed on the FAA’s Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube channels.

The Drone Advisory Committee (DAC) is a group of industry stakeholders – manufacturers, manned aircraft leaders, researchers, software providers, and service providers – whose role is to provide input to the FAA on critical areas of regulation.  According to the FAA’s official announcement, the DAC “is a broad-based, long-term advisory committee that provides the FAA with advice on key UAS integration issues by helping to identify challenges and prioritize improvements.”  It’s an important role, as the group provides research and industry perspective on regulations that could have a major impact on the industry: airspace access, how drone integration will be funded, and the appropriate role of state and local governments.

The FAA has published the meeting agenda for June 19.  Major topics for discussion will include DAC recommendations on unmanned traffic management (UTM) systems, a broad topic that includes Remote ID for drones and other critical technologies; and recommendation and discussion on safety culture in UAS.

DAC members are volunteers: but in this role they are working for the FAA.  These meetings are open to the public – but with the new virtual enviroment, participation is easier than ever.
