JUST THE NORMAL CAMERA ON IT, IT IS DIFFICULT TO SEE IF THERE IS ANYBODY IN THERE, BUT WITH THIS CLEAR TECHNOLOGY, YOU CAN SEE THE ORANGE SPOT. HANN

The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office unveiled its new drone unit Tuesday morning.It consists of eight members, all of whom are federally licensed to fly drones.The fleet also includes two small aircraft, at $4,000 apiece. The technology has drawn privacy concerns in the past.”That’s something we understand because you have to balance, you know, being able to get the information and balance that privacy,” Sgt. Andrew Bilda said.As the unit commander, he described certain situations where they’d use the new tools.Bilda said the drones can be used for freeway crashes or to map a scene and cut down on the amount of time the interstate is closed.The fleet also has infrared technology, which means they can be utilized in searches.”There was reports of a suicidal subject and it was a heavily wooded area, and it was nine or 10 o’clock at night, so it would have been a great time to be able to use the FLIR technology to look for the subject,” Bilda said. “With just the normal camera on, it’s difficult to see. If there’s anybody in there, but now with the FLIR technology, you can see the orange spot.”Bilda said the drones could also be deployed during protests, specifically if protesters get close to the freeway.
