An ‘intelligent traffic light control system’ will soon be active in Gurgaon, under which traffic lights will operate in a manner that they help prevent traffic jams in case of an accident in any part of the city, and will also continue to operate even when there is no electricity. This was revealed at the eighth meeting of the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) on Friday, which was chaired by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.
At the meeting, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the GMDA, Sudhir Rajpal said, “An intelligent traffic light control system is being installed in the city. Under this, traffic lights will operate in such a way that if there is an accident at any place, traffic will get diverted and there will be no problem of traffic jams at that spot. In addition, even if electricity goes, traffic lights will function smoothly.”
Apart from this, officials revealed that a CCTV-based public safety and traffic management system is being created in the city, as part of which 1000 CCTV cameras have already been installed, which are now being linked to the e-challan system. So far, officials said, 28 cameras have been connected so that an automatic challan reaches the owner of any vehicle if they violate traffic rules in that area.
The GMDA will also soon be using technology to monitor development of illegal colonies as well as the pollution level.
“A new Geographic Information System (GIS) Project is being undertaken as part of which the GMDA will use drone cameras to create a live monitoring system. This will help to monitor development of any illegal colonies and also monitor pollution levels,” said the CEO.
With monsoon round the corner, officials, at the meeting, said work has started to clean all master drains in the city to ensure there is no waterlogging this year. Long term efforts towards reducing water logging are also being made, said officials, revealing that the GMDA expects to make 135 kilometres of sewerage line network silt free by the end of this year. Furthermore, an action plan is being prepared to make Gurgaon a “zero discharge city” according to which the green belt along the roads will be deepened by one foot from the level of the road. As a result, it is expected that rainwater will go into the green belt instead of the road and slowly seep in the ground.
At Friday’s meeting, officials also revealed that four major ongoing projects in the city, cumulatively costing around Rs 280 crore, will be completed by October. These are the road improvement work from Umang Bharadwaj Chowk to Dwarka Expressway, and improvement of the Huda City Centre junction, Atul Kataria Chowk, and Mahavir Chowk.
Apart from these discussions, at the meeting on Friday, a proposal for the transfer of around two and a half acres of land in Sector 92 to the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) for the construction of a fire station was approved.
Prior to chairing the GMDA meeting, the Chief Minister, on Friday, inaugurated four projects, which have cumulatively been completed at a cost of more than Rs 10.60 crore. These include installation of 70 smart classrooms in Gurgaon and Mewat, and installation of 330 smart classrooms in 165 other government schools in the state. The other projects inaugurated were Project E-Lakshyavahini, under which training will be provided to 10,000 students in the state for more than 100 competitive exams, and an ‘advance life support ambulance’ which will be used by the Civil Hospital in Manesar.
The Chief Minister Friday also laid the foundation stone for the renovation of the Sheetla Mata Mandir, which is being done at a cost of Rs 200 crore. The temple, officials say, will have the capacity to accommodate 5 lakh devotees once it is renovated.
