MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The Dane County Sheriff’s Office held a demonstration Thursday to highlight the latest in law enforcement technology.
The demonstration was in partnership with Axon at the Law Enforcement Training Center and also highlighted the newest technologies including drone cameras, tasers and virtual reality training for officers and the public alike to explore.
One of the devices on display was the body-worn cameras that will be used by the sheriff’s office in their new pilot program.
“We’ve been working at getting body worn cameras for a very long time, so we’re very grateful that this program is finally getting off the ground, said Elise Schaffer, Public Information Officer for the Dane County Sheriff’s Office. ”The biggest thing is transparency, for everyone involved, having the body worn cameras is really going to help us.”
According to the sheriff’s office, they will have a long overdue transition to Axon’s Taser 10 later this year as the current model they use will be discontinued.
Axon’s Andrew Padilla said that the new taser model doubles the distance from 21 feet to 45 feet.
“Distance is an officer’s friend, it is safety, it creates time to react and speak to someone and deescalate the situation, said Padilla. “That’s what we want before anyone goes hands on or has to use some type of less lethal force.”
Officers will undergo training for the new body-worn cameras and the program will begin later this summer.
