Drone services expand in China in 2020

BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) — Drone services expanded in China last year as the emerging technology has been promoted in various sectors, official data showed.

There were about 523,600 registered unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) at the end of 2020. UAVs logged 1.594 million operating flight hours last year, up 36.4 percent from the previous year, according to the Civil Aviation Administration of China.

The country has been boosting the use of UAVs in various fields such as agriculture and environmental protection.

In January, China deployed a large UAV for generating artificial precipitation in northwest China’s Gansu Province, with the aim of boosting ecological protection.

This move marked the launch of China’s first large UAV-based weather-modification system.

During the harvest season for navel oranges this winter, UAVs carrying boxes of the fruit above the plantations have become a common sight in a district of Ganzhou, east China’s Jiangxi Province.

The UAVs were put into use in Nankang District as part of the local government’s efforts to deliver agricultural products for e-commerce and help boost local farmers’ incomes in the mountainous region.
