Condor: Drone Delivery Canada Launches Largest Delivery UAV

Today, Drone Delivery Canada unveiled its largest and longest-range drone, the Condor.

Under development over the past year, the single-rotor vehicle offers a payload of 400 pounds and can travel up to 124 miles on a tank of gas.

At 22 feet long, 5 feet wide and 7 feet high, the Condor has a wing/rotor span of 20 feet and is equipped with the company’s FLYTE UTM system and “DroneSpot” technology to ensure secure take-off and landing sites.

The technology arose from DDC’s work with Transport Canada as part of its Beyond Visual Line-of-Sight (BVLOS) Pilot Project in the towns of Moosonee and Moose Factory, Ontario.

Earlier this month, DDC requested $12 million dollars from Transport Canada’s National Trade Corridors Fund to deploy DDC drone delivery to two remote locations within Canada’s northernmost territories of Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Transport Canada’s $2-billion fund empowers infrastructure projects to “help improve the flow of goods and people in Canada, increasing the flow of trade in and out of Canada and help Canada’s transportation system better adapt to new technologies and innovation.”

On Jan. 24, DDC hired Staples veteran Michael Zahra as Senior Vice President of Operations and Strategy. Zahara previously worked as President of Staples Business Advantage Canada and was responsible for oversight of the shipment of millions of products annually, from 10 distribution centers and a fleet of over 170 trucks nationally, with full profitability responsibility and revenues over $500 million.

Last year, DDC announced a partnership with Toyota Tsusho Canada Inc. – a subsidiary of the well-known Toyota Group. The effort will see TTCI participate with DDC’s commercial pilot program in Canada for flight testing and development of international markets for drone delivery.

DDC will be working closely with Transport Canada to secure the necessary approvals to begin flight testing the Condor in Q3 of 2019.
