A glimpse into the future at the National Drone Range

ORANGE, Va. (WVIR) – Robots and drones from across the county descended upon Orange County today to show off their skills.

The Mitre Organization hosted a Community Day at its National Drone Range in Orange.

From flying drones that help perform search and rescue operations in the air, to a robotic dog named “Spot” that can venture into areas too dangerous for humans.

All types of robotics were on hand demonstrating the latest in unmanned technology.

Shay Major, a project leader at Mitre, says the event aims to bring different fields closer together.

“We sit at that intersection between industry, academia, and federal government,” Major said. “So events like this are a great opportunity to bring everyone together, help make those connections, and be on the forefront of innovation, any way we can with some of this technology.”

The next generation was also represented as student-run drone clubs from Orange and Greene County were on site to show their expertise.
